With the addition of festive bells and beats, Egmond’s debut single This Morning was rereleased in 2017 as the artist’s first Christmas single. (He would eventually do the same a year later with his first Afrikaans single V’more!)

Ironically, the new extended title was already in the lyrics, and whilst it was never considered a Christmas song to begin with, the opportunity to release a seasonal tune became a reality after Sandy Robbie took on the challenge to update the original song.

The release followed shortly after the Lights Blinding EP was out, right at the start of the festive season in 2017.

When Egmond wrote the song in 1997, he chose to incorporate the reference to Roxette’s first Christmas single from 10 years prior, as part of the words of his own song, which despite its clear reference to Christmas, was never treated as a Christmas song – until 20 years later!

Egmond reached out to producer Sandy Robbie with the project. And while Roxette would omit their Christmas references a few years later, having it in the lyrics worked to the song’s advantage. Says the singer, “We worked against a very tight deadline as the digital distributors were closing for the festive season and we had to rush to get it done. But we met the deadline and it was magic!”

Egmond said that the idea just struck a chord overnight and the next moment he had a Christmas hit on his hands – complete with a “christmasized” video of the original’s music video. And in pure pop tradition, instead of simply calling the song the Christmas Remix, Egmond simply added the subtitle to the track and whallah – it was Christmas.

A remastered version of the single was included in the updated COLLECTORS edition of Meer Sirkus Applous in 2026, making this the first appearance on an album. It is set for release just before Christmas 2026 as an exclusive limited edition CD-Single as well as 12″ Vinyl record.

I see you | smiling back at me | and I wonder if your eyes so blue | really wanna see | That I need you | more and more each day | tell me will I pull this through | speak my mind and say || And I wonder | is this winter gonna stay? | This Christmas for the broken-hearted | is never going away ||| You’re so far away | I miss you dearly | You’re the line around my pain | You lived a lie I turned to rain | This Morning | In my book of days | I wrote sincerely | A promise made in lovers’ lane | “Forever yours” was washed away | This morning ||| I’m calling | but your name falls with the snow | I used to be your morning star | and the sun’s blue afterglow | A disaster | a single tragedy | in a dream behind a door ajar | sadness waits for me || And I wonder | is this sadness gonna stay | This Christmas for the broken-hearted | is never going away || Na na na na na…
